Long and dark blue, it resembles little else on the road today and will get you admiring glances and quick looks wherever you drive it. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1938 Packard Eight 5Passenger Sedan, which was assembled at Packards Detroit, Michigan facility. For 1938, the Packard One Twenty became the Model Eight. This Packard was prominently displayed proudly in the Missoula Auto Museum, where it was also professionally restored.
Finished in Caribbean Blue, this cars paint and trim are in overall very good order, with a small blemish on the passenger front door. The glass panels are clear and intact, including the twopiece windshield and split backlight. The cars lights are hazefree and look great, including the single round red reflector on the drivers side rear and the centermounted brake light on the trunk, a precursor of todays center highmounted stop lights.
This Packard rolls on Commander biasply, wide whitewall tires, sized 7.0016, surrounding factory wheel covers. Tires and wheels are in overall good order, the cars body panels are solid and straight, including the socalled suicide rear doors, and the bumpers are in very good shape. Driver convenience features include fourwheel, hydraulic disc brakes, a pair of amber fog lights perched atop the front bumper and deluxe heater tucked under the dashboard on the passengers side.
Under the veeshaped hood is Packards 282 CID Lhead straight eightcylinder engine with a Stromberg carburetor and five main bearings. Backing up that engine is a selective synchromesh threespeed manual transmission and a 4.36 rear end.
Inside, the cars tan bench seats are in very good order, with the back seat offering generous passenger space. The brown carpet looks very good and the tan headliner is borderline immaculate. The gray instrument panel presents a contrast to the interiors earth tones and looks fine overall, however, the speedometers face is very milky. A gray, threespoke steering wheel faces the driver while the inner door panels match the seats. The mirror glass is in very good order, as is the tall gearshift lever, which was in its final year. This is a radiodelete model.
This car introduced theindependent front suspensionto the Packard line. Its socalled "SafeTFlex" suspension was anunequal upper and lower Aarm typewith the largest possible lower Aarm composed of two different arms bolted together at a ninetydegree angle. Advantages claimed for the system included superior maintenance ofwheel alignmentfrom the wide spread of the lower Aarm, a permanent fixing of thecaster angle and an increased percentage of the braking force transmitted to the frame through the torque arm.
Competition to this Packard in 1938 included Cadillacs companion make, the LaSalle, Chryslers Airstream, Fords LincolnZephyr and the RollsRoyce 25/30.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 5,998 miles, not believed to be actual. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE
