The Fords of 1940 were all about style. Taking cues from the stunning pre-war Lincoln Zephyr Fords chief designer Eugene T. Bob Gregorie shaped the new Ford range with a distinct front-end treatment and streamlined form. The prominent prow and horizontal grille bars defined the new Fords face which now had integrated headlamps set low and wide in the front fenders. The venerable flathead V8 remained under the hood now uprated to 90 horsepower though a smaller 60-hp version was available as an option. Particularly in convertible coupe form as this car is the 1940 Ford is a simple yet striking design with timeless enduring charm.Recently out of a quarter-century of continuous ownership this 1940 Ford Convertible is a delightful example. The paintwork is in fine order and the color complements the curves of the body. Some moderate creasing is noted on the drivers seat yet it is in remarkably good order considering the age. Likewise the canvas convertible top and the matching boot are in excellent condition. The two-tone dash is correct for this Deluxe model along with the ivory steering wheel and matching window winders and escutcheons. Features include wood-grain trim column shift manual gearbox clock and factory radio. The 90-horsepower flathead V8 is tidy and well-detailed in the correct shade of dark green with black accessories. Details like authentic reproduction radiator hoses bear the Ford logo and part number stamp and are affixed with period-correct clamps. Feeding the V8 is a single downdraft carburetor topped with an oil bath air cleaner. The engine runs well with the signature burble and easy-going character make flathead Fords of this era so endearing.
