Before the Coupe and Sedan de Ville became separate models, they were part of the Cadillac Series 62. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to offer this 1956 Series 62 Coupe de Ville Hardtop. This example is one of 25,086 examples made in 1956 and comes out of a collection out of Amarillo, Texas. This Caddy has an older restoration that still shows nicely today

Dressed in Alpine White (code 90) over Sonic Blue (code 20), this Coupe de Villes paint and trim are in overall very good condition, with only the most minor blemishes visible upon close inspection.

The cars bodywork is straight and solid, the cars chrome front Dagmar bumper and rear chrome bumper with the exhaust that exits through the rear bumper shine brilliantly. This model has the fashionable rear wheel fender skirts. The engine bay is very tidy, the battery is in very good shape.

This De Ville rolls on wide whitewall tires, with factory full wheel covers. The tires and wheel covers are in satisfactory condition but the hood crest is missing.

Under the hood is a 365 CID V8 engine, which was new for 1956. It was a bored and stroked version of Cadillacs 331 CID V8, which debuted in 1949. The engine is linked to a Hydramatic fourspeed automatic transmission and this example has 3.36:1 rear axle (code P). Driver convenience features included power steering, power brakes, power windows, power front seats and an optional heater.

Inside, the car has a Light Blue Bombay Pattern Cloth and Light Blue Leather (code 42) interior. The front and rear bench seats are in great shape and the rear seat has a center folddown armrest. The wipers and front power seat are inoperable. The blue carpeting is in decent order, the blue headliner looks great and the threespoke steering wheel is in satisfactory order. The cars blue metal instrument panel is in satisfactory shape while the inner door panels are in good original order. Completing the interior is a factory AM radio.

In 1956, there was a new grille, with finer textured insert, and the repositioning of the parking lights in the bumpers, below the wing guards for Series 62 models. Buyers were given an option of the standard satin finish grille or an optional gold finish. Cadillac script was found on the left side. A narrow chrome molding and nine vertical louvers were seen. The Coupe de Ville had a model nameplate and a Cadillac crest on the sides of the front fenders. The Coupe de Ville was joined by the Series 62 Sedan de Ville, Cadillacs first standard production fourdoor hardtop. Similar to the Coupe de Ville, it was also more expensive and more luxuriously trimmed that the standard fourdoor Series 62. Given their sales success, it was only natural that the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville were moved to their own separate series in 1959. Series 62 sales reached an alltime record in 1956 at 134,502 units, accounting for an alltime record 86.4 percent of all Cadillacs sold. This included 66,818 De Villes and 6,050 Eldorados.

Competition to this Series 62 Coupe de Ville in 1956 included Buicks Series 60 Century Riviera, Chryslers New Yorker Newport, DeSotos Fireflite, Dodges Coronet Lancer, Lincolns Capri, Mercurys Monterey, Oldsmobiles 98 Deluxe Holiday, Packards Caribbean and Pontiacs Star Chief.

If the notion of a classic Cadillac with a few small project areas to work on appeals to you, swing by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to examine this Coupe de Ville. With its tasteful tail fins, Dagmar front bumper, it was among the height of mid1950s excess.
