348 CID Turbo Thrust V8 engine from a 1961 Chevy with dual exhausts
Powerglide twospeed automatic transmission
Longer, lower and wider was the theme at Chevrolet in 1959 and the Impala did not disappoint in those regards. It sported a 1.5inch longer wheelbase than the previous year while setting three inches lower and two inches wider. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1959 Impala fourdoor sedan.
This example was made in GMs Kansas City, Missouri factory (VIN code K).
Finished in correct Tuxedo Black (code 900), the cars paint and trim are in overall very good order, with only minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The cars bodywork is straight and the cars chrome bumpers shine brilliantly in the sun, the engine bay is in satisfactory order and the battery is in great shape.
This car rides on BFGoodrich wide whitewall tires, size 8.3014 at all four corners with factory wheel covers. The tires and wheel covers are all in very good order.
A period correct 348 CID Turbo Thrust V8 engine breathing via dual exhausts replaces the original motor. The V8 is linked to a Powerglide twospeed automatic transmission. Nineteen fiftynine models came with improved SafetyMaster brakes.
Inside, a restored red interior on the bench seats are in great condition, as is the complementary carpet and gray headliner. A twospoke steering wheel faces the driver while the instrument panel and inner door panels continue the theme set by the rest of the interior. The transmission quadrant selector is marked PRNDG. The G stood for Grade Retard. The grade retard feature was not designed as a low or forward acceleration gear but was meant to be used only on long declines to generate a degree of engine braking. Completing the interior are a shift lever and a factory AM radio.
The 1959 Chevrolet Impala was redesigned. Sharing bodyshells with lowerend Buicks and Oldsmobiles as well as with Pontiac, as part of a GM economy move, the Chevrolets wheelbase was 11/2 inches longer. Using a new Xframe chassis, the roof line was three inches lower, bodies were two inches wider, and curb weight increased. Its tailfins protruded outward, rather than upward. The taillights were a large teardrop design at each side, and two slimwide nonfunctional front air intake scoops were added just above the grille.
The Impala became a separate series, adding a fourdoor hardtop and fourdoor sedan, to the twodoor Sport Coupe and convertible. Sport Coupes featured a shortened roof line and wrapover back window. The standard engine was a 235 CID Blue Flame I6, while the base V8 was the carryover 283 CID Turbo Fire V8. Optional were a 283 CID Turbo Fire V8 with 290 horsepower and 348 CID Wseries Turbo Thrust V8 up to 335 horsepower. Standard were front and rear armrests, an electric clock, dual sliding sun visors, and crankoperated front vent windows. A contoured hooded instrument panel held deepset gauges. A sixway power seat was a new option, as was Speedminder, for the driver to set a needle at a specific speed and a buzzer would sound if the preset was exceeded. Fourdoor sedan sales in 1959 totaled 525,461 units.
Sedan competition to this Impala in 1959 included Dodges Coronet GetAway Six, Edsels Ranger Economy Six, Ford Galaxie Town Sedan with Mileage Maker Six and Plymouths Belvedere with PowerFlow 6.
