In the late 1980s and during the 1990s, many car magazines wrote articles about all of the vehicles offered in Europe and Japan that, for various reasons, never landed on our shores. One of the more tantalizing cars was Nissans Skyline GTR. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1989 GTR.
Nineteen eightynine was the Skyline R32s first model year and about 8,000 GTRs were made at Nissans factory in Musashimurayama, Japan. This example is dressed in a striking Electric Blue which presents extremely well. The cars bodywork is solid and straight, its engine bay is extremely tidy, the cargo area looks great, the battery appears new and the cars rear wing spoiler and bodycolored bumpers condition match the rest of the exterior.
This Skyline rolls on Falken radials, size 245/40ZR17 at all four corners. Each tire is wrapped around a sixspoke alloy wheel. The wheels and tires are in very good condition.
Under the hood is Nissans 2.6L DOHC, 24valve, twinturbocharged inline sixcylinder engine connected to a fivespeed manual transmission backed by a mechanical limitedslip differential. Nissan rated the motor (code RB26DETT) at 276 bhp @ 6,800 rpm and 260 lbsft @ 4,400 rpm. Theengine actually produced 316 horsepower but was underrated due to a Japanese car makers gentlemens agreement not to exceed 276hp. Some factory features of the RB26DETT include:
Six throttle body intakes
Solid lifter valve actuation, shim under bucket
CAS (crank angle sensor) driven off exhaust cam, tells ECU (engine control unit) crank/cam position
Watercooled, oil pressure lubed turbos
OEM cast pistons have cooling channels under the crowns (extra oil cooling to reduce piston temperature)
Piston oil squirters
Sodiumfilled exhaust valves
Eight counterweighted crankshafts
I beam connecting rods
The RB26DETT engine block is cast iron, while the cylinder head is aluminum alloy. The intake varies from other RBseries motors in that it has six individual throttle bodies (three sets of two throttle assemblies Siamesed together) instead of a single throttle body. The engine also uses a parallel twinturbo system, with a pair of T25type ceramic turbochargers set by the wastegates to limit boost pressure to 10 psi, although the Skyline GTR has a builtin boost restrictor to keep it under 14 psi. The GTR had a significantly larger intercooler, larger brakes, and aluminum front guards and hood. Other distinguishing features include flared front and rear wheel arches.
Inside, the cars interior has been completely reupholstered in black. More supportive front bucket seats are fitted, the matching carpet and headliner look great. A threespoke steering wheel faces the driver, the inner door panels and instrument panels are all in very good order. The dashboard features a torque meter that shows how much torque is being delivered to the front wheels (from zero to 50 percent). Oil temp, voltage, and turbo boost gauges are fitted just above the climate controls. The center console and shifter look great and an AM/FM stereo with CD player completes the interior.
The R32 Skyline debuted in 1989. It was available as either a twodoor coupe or fourdoor hardtop sedan, all other bodystyles were dropped. The R32 featured several versions of theRBseries straightsixengines, which had improved heads and used the ECCS (Electronically Concentrated Control System) injection system. Most models hadHICASfourwheel steering, with the rear wheels being hydraulicallylinked to the front steering. ABS was standard on the GTR plus a mechanical limitedslip differential.
As of August 2014, the R32 Skyline GTR has been eligible for US import under the NHTSA 25year rule that allows vehicles 25 years old (to the month) or older to be imported. These vehicles, due to their age, do not have to comply with federal emissions or with Federal motor vehicle safety standards.
