History of the Nissan President Sovereign First introduced in 1965, the Nissan President was marketed to wealthy and elite members of Japan as its long wheelbase and large engine displacement meant the model was only affordable by those in the top tax bracket. Offered initially with either a 3 liter straight six or a 4 liter V8, the President featured a lavishly appointed interior featuring front and rear air conditioning, full power features, and rear seat heaters. Their legendary quality and performance attracted many Japanese aristocrats including former Prime Minister Eisaku Sat. The President would see a slight redesign in 1982 with an upgraded suspension, a larger fuel tank and modern square shaped headlamps. 1985 marked the first appearance of the Sovereign VIP trim level. By the end of the 1980s, Nissan sought to further establish the pedigree of its flagship model by giving the President a modern redesign. The new chassis, designated JHG50 debuted at the 1989 Tokyo motor show. A vast array of new power features and amenities were added which included a Connolly leather interior as well as a passenger airbag. Power for the new car was derived from Nissans VH45DE 4.5 liter DOHC V8 with 270hp which was the same engine that powered the Infiniti Q45 in U.S. models. These exclusive motorcars were built in limited numbers and are considered by some to be the pinnacle of all the President models.
