History of the Jaguar XJR-S Asprey Limited Edition In order to keep up with other manufacturers, Jaguar launched its own performance tune company, Jaguar Sport, in 1988. The new company was a 50/50 split venture between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR) that was instrumental in developing the legendary Jaguar XJ220. JaguarSport began offering a tuned version of the popular XJS (the XJR-S) in 1988. The XJR-S initially featured a tuned version of the 5.3-liter V12 engine with body enhancements, suspension, and handling upgrades. However, Jaguar increased the engine displacement to a 6.0-liter block featuring fuel injection and added an advanced engine management system in September 1989. These performance enhancements resulted in approximately 320 horsepower and an approximate top speed of 160mph. In 1992, Jaguar decided to commemorate the launch of the XJ220 supercar by bringing the XJR-S model to the U.S. for the final year of production. Only 100 examples named the Asprey Limited Edition were produced for the U.S., and each received a special number plate in front of the shift lever.
