*1965 Shelby Cobra by Unique Performance*In 1961 due to health concerns Carroll Shelby was forced to hang up his racing helmet and began selling sports cars to racers around the southwest United States. Primarily focused on Maserati Shelby decided fairly quickly that he wanted to develop his own sports car that would be equally at home on the street and the race track. The formula was simple- Shelby would find a lightweight roadster and place a large American V8 in the front attach a robust gearbox and tweak the suspension to handle all the extra power. After approaching and subsequently being turned down by multiple car manufacturers AC Cars out of the UK agreed to supply Shelby with a few of their Ace roadsters. At the same time an engine program was developed with Ford agreeing to send Shelby a few of their high performance V8s for the project and by mid-1962 the first Cobra was completed. Immediately the car was a sensation and began demolishing competition at race tracks- the engines moved from 260 cubic inches to 289 and finally in 1965 the 427. For the 427 engined cars the entire chassis was significantly redesigned and the bodywork was flared to accept wider tires and side exhaust was added on the majority of the cars. Between 1961 and 1968 Shelby produced only 998 Cobras and they have become one of the most sought after collector cars today.As values of the original Cobras began to rise significantly in the 1980s and 1990s the market for recreations began to grow. Although some of the recreations werent particularly accurate to the original shape there were a few that were done properly and looked just like an original. This example has been tweaked for even more power with a set of aluminum heads as well as an aluminum manifold with dual Holley carburetors on top. The rotating assembly has been improved with a high performance crankshaft and Cobra-Jet connecting rods and a dual point distributor helps the car run great in all conditions. Behind the engine is a 4-Speed manual gearbox with a modernized hydraulic clutch that makes the car significantly easier to drive than an original. In the rear a Jaguar fully independent rear suspension keeps the wheels on the road while providing confidence inspiring handling and 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes slow the car down. Most people dont have the millions of dollars it would take to buy an original Shelby Cobra but you can have all the same excitement they provide for a fraction of the price with this replica.
