*1987 Jaguar XJ12 Sovereign*The Jaguar XJ has always filled a special place in the luxury sedan marketplace. Although it was always designed with comfort in mind Jaguar engineers went to great lengths to also make sure the car retained the sporty driving characteristics that the company had become known for. Beginning production in 1968 the XJ has always been one of the most beautiful sedans on sale and the shape evolved over the years into the car pictured here- known as a Series III. When the Series III went on sale in 1979 the looks were based off of the XJS coupe on sale at the same time but the longer roofline and more tapered rear end led to the XJ Sedan being an arguably more beautiful car. The Series III XJs were a massive hit for Jaguar and between 1979 and 1992 over 315 000 cars were produced.This 1987 XJ12 Sovereign is a particularly unique example of a Series III XJ in the United States. Originally sold in Germany this European market car was imported to the US when it was nearly new and stayed with the first owner until early 2019. The XJ12 features Jaguars legendary V12 which was never offered in XJs intended for the US. Painted in an absolutely stunning shade of Tungsten this XJ12 retains its original paint which has clearly been cared for throughout the cars life and presents like a nearly brand new car. The signature Jaguar 40-hole pepperpot alloy wheels give the car a perfect period look and compliment the design of the car. On the inside the Isis Blue leather interior retains the supple feel that only English leather can provide and shows little wear on any of the surfaces. The beautiful burl wood inlays that Jaguar is known for are in wonderful shape and the two spoke leather wrapped steering wheel brings you right back to 1987.With how nice this XJ12 looks on the outside it is no surprise that the same care has been taken with the mechanicals and this car still drives like it is brand new. The single-overhead-cam V12 produces 256 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque but was designed to be so smooth and quiet that you dont even know it is running when the car is at idle. It is backed up by the notoriously reliable General Motors TH400 3-speed automatic transmission which helps the car glide smoothly around town. Over the last three years the car has been treated to some comprehensive servicing by Jaguar marque experts to make sure the car is in perfect condition and always ready to be enjoyed. In January of this year the car was thoroughly freshened by Classic Showcase in Oceanside CA who went through the car with a fine tooth comb and fixed anything that wasnt exactly right. There is an invoice on file for the work completed that totals nearly $40 000 and will be included along with the historic service records and import documents dating back to when the car was new. A Series III Jaguar XJ isnt exactly a rare car these days- but if you look around you will see most have been neglected and fallen into disrepair over the years. Finding an example that has been this well cared for automatically makes it special and that this is a V12 XJ makes this one of the most desirable Series III XJs on the market.
