Overview

1974 Chevron B26

Price: USD $225,000

We are pleased to offer this factory, ex-John Lepp Chevron B26 for sale in race-ready condition.
The Chevron B26 was the first monocoque sports car from Derek Bennett and followed on from the successful space-framed B19, B21 and B23 line of racing car designs which preceded it.
At the beginning of 1974, Roger Hires Forge Mill Racing team took over the contract to run the factory supported Chevron racing team from Red Rose Motors. John Lepp, already a master exponent of the marque and who had been racing for Red Rose Motors since 1968, was hired as lead driver along with Roland Barrios as his team-mate, Barrios brought along sponsorship from the Portuguese sherry company, Pedro Domecq which is reflected in the current, period-correct livery of this gorgeous B26.
Since buying the car in 2011, the curent UK owner has successfully raced the car in the historic scene around Europe with its last appearance being at Spa CER in 2015. The car has now been re-freshed and is offered for sale in race-ready condition. It has a fresh, zero-miles Hart 420R engine rebuild by XTEC Engineering. The gearbox has been rebuild and fuel cell, seat belts and fire system are all current.
This stunning B26 benefits from a continuous ownership and is exceptionally well documented. It benefits from a current FIA HTP and is very usable in various race series such as CER and Pre-80 endurance where it has been and will continue to be a welcome and front-running entry,

John Lepp, already a master exponent of the marque and who had been racing for Red Rose Motors since 1968, was hired as lead driver along with Roland Barrios as his team, who also brought along sponsorship from the Portuguese sherry company, Pedro Domecq.
Lepp started off the season racing the factory ex-Team Gunston B26 prototype in the first couple of races before two new cars were supplied for the team, chassis B26-74-07 for Lepp, and B26-74-08 for Barrios.
Lepp first raced B26-74-07 started at Silverstone in May 74, in the Martini International Interserie event where he finished 7th overall and 3rd in the 2-ltre class. For the next event, the Nurburgring 1000 Kms, Lepp was partnered by ex-Red Rose teammate John Bridges. After a strong run, their race came to an end at three-quarter distance with ignition failure. Back at the Nurburgring a month later for the 300 Kms Interserie race, Lepp finished 9th. The following week at Clermont-Ferrand for the Auvergne Trophy, Lepp finished 3rd, a result which saw him take the lead in the European Drivers championship for 2-litre cars. Three more European championship rounds were next, at Misano where Lepp finished 9th, at Enna where Lepp had an off-track excursion which wiped-off the nose and ended his race, and at Hockenheim where Lepp finished 2nd overall in the Preis de Nationen. This was the last European championship event Lepp did with 07 and despite missing at least half the rounds, Lepp still managed to secure enough points to finish 5th overall in the series. The last race for Lepp and for 07 was in the Brands Hatch 1000 Kms with Richard Scott as codriver, but the car was disqualified after a starter motor infringement.
B26-74-07 then went into long-term dry storage with John Lepp and remained untouched and still in Domecq Sherry livery until sold in 1980 to Donald Mercer of South Africa. Damaged in a testing accident, 07 was sold back to John Lepp in 1989. Repaired and fully restored by Lepp the following year, Lepp sold the car in May 94 to Fred Laufer of Essen who raced the B26 in the International Supersports series from 1995 to 97.
Sold in 2002 to Jacob Shalit of California, 07 then passed through the hands of classic car collectors Bruce Bannatyne in 2003 and then Johnnie Crean in 2005 before being purchased by the current o..... for more information visit www.RMD.be
