The Porsche 911 produced between 1989 and 1994 is the third generation (964) of Porsche's famous 911 line of sports cars. It introduced significant styling changes over previous generations like exterior bumpers and fog lamps that were made flush with the car for improved aerodynamics as well as the signature Speedline wheels. Speaking of aerodynamics, the 964 also brought with it an electric rear spoiler that raised at speeds and was the first car to offer Porsche's Tiptronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as options. The suspension received revisions too, replacing the torsion bars with coil springs and shock absorbers. New safety and convenience features for this generation included power steering and ABS brakes as standard equipment, dual airbags, a better climate control system, and revised warning lights. This naturally-aspirated variant came with a new 3.6-liter flat-6 engine dubbed the M64 that put out 247 HP and 310 Nm (228 lbft) of torque. 0-60 times for the NA 964 were 5.5 seconds with the manual transmission and 6.2 seconds with the Tiptronic transmission.

A Turbo variant of the 964 was introduced in 1990 that re-used the 3.3-liter engine from the 930 with slight modifications that made it less prone to turbo lag. This helped alleviate the reputation that previous generations of Porsches had earned for being hard to control thanks to their significant turbo lag. Due to this issue, the Porsche 930 Turbo had earned the nickname The Widowmaker. The Turbo 3.3-liter engine turned up the power to 316 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque and knocked the 0-60 time down to 4.8 seconds.

In 1993, Porsche dropped the 3.3-liter for a KKK K27 turbocharged version of the 3.6-liter M64 engine making an increased 355 HP and 520 N?m (384 lb-ft) of torque through either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed Getrag G50 manual transmission. The 3.6 further knocked down the 0-60 time to 4.0 seconds. This version was only sold for the 1993 and 1994 model years with fewer than 1,500 cars produced in total. The Turbo 3.6 was elevated to icon status when Will Smith and Martin Lawrence used a Triple Black Turbo 3.6 in the 1995 cult-classic film, Bad Boys. The Turbo 3.6 not only performs, but it has now become the poster car for 1990s coolness.

This particular example, chassis # WP0AC2961RS480291, is one of those 1,500 cars and is finished in one of the most attractive shades of Silver Polar Silver. It retains its original engine and transmission according to the build-sheet we received from Porsche. It's a largely original survivor that was clearly very well taken care of by its previous owners. The car was first registered in 1994 in New Hampshire before the owner moved to New Jersey, New York, and back to New Jersey again. It was then purchased by its second owner in 2002 in Pennsylvania before being sold in 2019 to its most recent owner, also in Pennsylvania.

Though previously documented service history is limited to what is listed on the Carfax and stamped in the maintenance booklet, we commissioned a recent $6,500 service, and the car is now ready to be enjoyed. A compression test performed in May 2021 yielded consistent compression readings from 140-147 psi across all cylinders. During this service, the underside received a full dry-ice blast cleaning to get it as close to showroom condition as possible without removing the original finishes, coatings, and factory-applied stickers.

Upon purchase, the new owner will receive receipts of some of this 964's recent services alongside a dealer brochure, original manuals, tools, spare, air-pump, and a copy of the build sheet. The Turbo 3.6 variant of the 964 is an incredibly rare and exciting machine to drive and certainly worthy of its holy grail status as one of the best Porsche Turbos ever produced. The low-end torque curve that the 3.6 Turbo was famously known for helps make boost delivery more predictable and fun. Once the boost kicks in, and you row through the first three gears, you are happily pushed back into the driver's seat by the 355 horses under the hood. It handles corners magnificently, is tame around town, and is an absolute brute when accelerating onto the highway. In short, this is one very fun and rare Porsche.
