*2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R*When Ford set out to design the 2000 Cobra R their goal was to create the fastest Mustang to ever come out of the factory. They accomplished this goal by producing a car that could do the 0-60 sprint in 4.4 seconds the quarter mile in just over 13 and topped out at an astonishing 175 miles per hour. This example is number 258 out of just 300 built and with just 3 535 miles from new has been meticulously cared for by its two owners. Still maintaining all of the factory documentation which includes things like the original build sheet invoice engine dyno from the Ford factory and build sign off from the engine builder it is safe to say that in addition to being one of the lowest mileage cars it is also one of the most comprehensively documented. As the Cobra R was essentially a race car for the road Ford also included a set of racing numbers for owners to put on when going to the track- those are also included with this car and have never been installed.Ford ceased standard Cobra production for the year 2000 with their sites set on building the far more involved Cobra R. Unlike any previous Mustang the Cobra R had a totally unique aerodynamics package with a large rear wing lower body aero and a deep front splitter to keep the lift down at high speed. A set of special lightweight five spoke wheels were installed along with a unique Borla side exit exhaust which were required to fit around the racing fuel cell in the rear. Under the hood Ford built a Dual Overhead Cam 5.4-Liter V8 the engine was rated from the factory at 385 Horsepower and 385 Lb-Ft of Torque and would rev to 6 500 RPM. Independent tests have shown that these numbers were low and in reality the car produced nearly this much to the tires meaning actual horsepower was well over 400. These engines became renowned for their durability and the overhead cam cylinder heads ultimately went into use on the Ford GT supercar. This power was all sent through a Tremec 6-Speed manual close ratio gearbox which was set up for drag racing or road course use. A set of Eibach springs at all four corners reduced ride height by 1.5 inches in front and 1 inch in the rear and a set of track tuned Bilsteins helped dampen the car on the road. 4-Piston Brembo brakes all around also helped the Cobra R stop faster than any Mustang before it and provided ample power for even the most demanding track day.On the exterior all 300 Cobra Rs were painted the same Performance Red color and had a charcoal colored Recaro interior. Since the car was designed for only the most serious track enthusiast it didnt come with air conditioning a radio cruise control or a back seat to keep the weight down as much as possible. All of these measures meant that the Cobra R could keep up with a contemporary Corvette Z06 but it also meant that the Cobra R was one of the most expensive Mustangs ever produced. With an MSRP of over $55 000 even the biggest Mustang enthusiasts were surprised by the price- that being said all 300 cars sold out almost immediately. Ford has not produced many Mustangs that are as track focused as the 2000 Cobra R and the collectibility of them has been skyrocketing in recent years. This example is the perfect one to add to your collection given its originality low miles and extensive levels of documentation.
