Overview

1929 Packard 640

Price: USD $149,500

Introduced in August of 1928, Packards Sixth Series continued to help the marque dominate the competitive American luxury motoring market. The 640 Custom Eight and 645 Deluxe Eight occupied the upper tier of Packards catalog, both powered by the superb 384.8-cubic-inch, nine-main-bearing inline eight-cylinder engine. Delivering 106 horsepower through a smooth three-speed manual transmission, the Custom Eight offered a level of refinement and effortless performance that few contemporaries could rival.

Offered in a range of body styles and two wheelbase lengths, arguably the most sporting of them all was the Roadster. Set on the 140-inch wheelbase chassis typically reserved for Packards large sedans and limousines, the 640 Custom Eight Roadster exuded both presence and sport. With its sweeping fenders, long bonnet, and neatly integrated rumble seat, it offered the thrill of an open car paired with the gravitas expected of a Packard.

This particularly attractive 640 Custom Eight Roadster, finished in a striking combination of cream bodywork with black fenders, accented by green wire wheels and matching frame aprons. The theme continues through the interior, which is trimmed in rich green leather, now beautifully matured from years of gentle use. A beige canvas top adds contrast and completes the cars timeless aesthetic, while thoughtful details such as wind wings and a tilting windshield add both function and flair.

This Roadster is lavishly appointed with period-correct accessories, including dual sidemount spares, dual Trippe Speedlights, a radiator stone guard, and the iconic Goddess of Speed mascot perched atop the tall Packard grille. Additional touches such as running board step plates, dual cowl lights, a drivers-side spotlight, and a folding rear luggage rack with wooden slats speak to both touring practicality and classic Packard elegance. The overall impression is one of restrained opulencean automobile built as much to be admired as it was to be driven.

Delivered new to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this 640 Custom Eight Roadster was restored many years ago to a high standard, earning an Antique Automobile Club of America National First Prize in 1994, as evidenced by the badge displayed on its stone guard. Its subsequent life reflects the care of discerning custodians. For a number of years it was part of the respected collection of the late Robert L. Byers of Pennsylvania, a noted enthusiast of Full Classics. More recently, it has resided in the stable of a southern-based collector, where it has been maintained with the same degree of attention and appreciation.

Today, the restoration presents with an inviting character that speaks to both quality workmanship and careful preservation. The paint retains a handsome depth and uniform gloss, complemented by bright chrome details that remain in excellent order. The cabin provides a feeling of warmth, the leather displaying the kind of gentle patina that only time and proper care can impart. Under the forward-hinged hood, Packards 384.8-cubic-inch straight eight continues to deliver the smooth, confident power that defined the marque, its output delivered through a crisp-shifting three-speed gearbox.

With its elegant color scheme, desirable accessories, and dignified presentation, this 1929 Packard 640 Custom Eight Roadster represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of the most handsome and sporting Packards of the Classic Era, it stands as a proud reminder of Packards timeless mottoAsk the Man Who Owns One.
