Overview

1954 Maserati 160-T4

Price: USD $36,500

Despite wearing the familiar trident badges and signature Italianate flair, Maserati motorcycles were not actually constructed alongside the cars in the eponymous auto companys Modena factory. At the time, Maserati was controlled by the Orsi Group, which also owned several other subsidiaries that included FCAM Fabbrica Candele e Accumulatori Maserati manufacturers of spark plugs, electrical components and other automotive parts. Recognizing the ballooning demand for two-wheeled transport in fuel-starved Italy in the wake of World War II, FCAM purchased a small independent motorcycle manufacturer from Bolonga called Italmoto in 1953. Orsi moved Italmoto production to the FCAM factory in Modena, and the first product to roll out was a refreshed version of an existing design called the Maserati Tipo 160/T4. Powered by a 158cc overhead valve four-stroke single, the compact, and lightweight 160/T4 was rated at a modest 7.5 bhp at 5,500 rpm, which was enough to propel it to about 65 mph.

While small in stature and output, the 160/T4 was a beautiful little touring bike for a more upscale buyer, with a jewel-like quality worthy of the storied Maserati Trident badge. The model established the brand in the market as new, larger models were developed. It proved popular enough to remain a mainstay of the line until Maserati ended motorcycle production in 1959.

This gorgeous and rare Tipo 160/T4 hails from 1954, presented in beautifully restored condition from the stable of a noted collector and enthusiast. Bearing matching frame and engine numbers, this bike was acquired by the most recent owner in 2020 and subsequently stripped to a bare frame and restored by Red Car Restorations, with the task of applying the striking black and silver paintwork with red pinstriping entrusted to Foster Vintage refinishing. This particular bike is set up for solo riding with a monoposto saddle and chrome luggage rack. Other eye-catching details include chrome wheels, polished brake drums, cloisonne Maserati badges, front fender plate, and fittingly, a period-style Modena registration plate. The 158cc four-stroke single is exceptionally tidy and breathes in through a DellOrto carburetor, and out through a chrome Silentium exhaust.

Whether as a piece of sparkling garage art or as a head turner at your local vintage bike meet, this rare and exceptional Maserati is certain to bring its next keeper joy far greater than its minute dimensions and modest output might suggest.
