These included reclining seats in addition to interior brightwork and wood veneer trim. The exterior was distinguished by additional chrome beltline, while its top, unlike earlier Mercedes-Benz cabriolets, was nearly hidden below a boot cover, giving these cabriolets an almost roadster-like smoothness of line when open touring. Where the 220 sedans were dowdy and practical, the 220S cabriolets projected an image of subtle elegance. From 1956-1959 Mercedes-Benz would produce only 2,178 220S Cabriolets.
