Overview

1970 Mercedes-Benz 600

Price: USD $189,900

By the late 1950s Mercedes-Benz was looking for a replacement for the W186 300 series saloon as the companys flagship. The W100 600 saloon made its debut at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in 1963. Developed over a seven year period, the 600s shape was formed by Paul Bracq and Bruno Sacco. A technological marvel with an incredible array of power features and functions, the 600 was finalized by engineers Rudolf Uhlenhaut, Fritz Nallinger and Karl Wilfred. Their simple idea was to ask how amazingcould a car be with no cost limitations. The aptly named Grosser, or Grand Mercedes, was conceived withevery possible power feature imaginable and with an internal hydraulic system that operated everything from the windows to the trunk. Suspension was independently controlled at all four corners by an intricate pneumatic system powered by a one cylinder air compressor in the engine compartment. The engine itself was Mercedes first production V8 with single overhead camshafts. Fitted standard with Bosch mechanical injection, the M100 V8 unit was good for 300hp and pushed the 600 to speeds in excess of 120mph. Craftsmanship was second to none with virtually every part of the car fitted by hand. Costing over $20,000 new in 1965 (the equivalent of over $157,000 today) the 600 attracted numerous elite clientele including everyone from politicians, dignitaries, royalty, to celebrities such as Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, John Lennon, George Harrison, and more. The 600 was so ahead of its time that production of the model lasted until 1981 with very minor changes in its impressive 18 year production run. Only 2,677 were assembled in total, with 2,190 featuring the practical short wheel base sedan body. Today the 600 is highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts. Literally the Maybach of its day, the W100 chassis 600 is a perfect embodiment of what Mercedes-Benz strives for: the best or nothing. The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Sedan featured here is finished in stunning Medium Blue over an impeccably kept leather Parchment interior. This largely original example was purchased new in November 1969 from Autobahn Motors Co. in Trenton, New Jersey by former President of Johnson & Johnson Robert W. Johnson III and was recently acquired from his estate. The accompanying service documentation verifies that this 1970 Mercedes-Benz 600 Sedan has only traveled 56,259 miles from new. Also included are its original books, tool kit, Becker Radio material, data card copy and more! A stunning, highly original example with excellent provenance and low mileage this Mercedes-Benz 600 Sedan would make a welcome addition to any premiere collection.
