Overview

1994 Jaguar XJ220

Price: USD $529,900

Mid-engine, 540 plus horsepower, forced induction and a top speed of over 200 miles an hour. Do we have your attention yet? Daniel Schmitt & Co. Classic Car Gallery is proud to present what could be the most infamous supercars of all time and arguably the most famous Jaguar XJ220 in existence. The XJ220 claims a unique position among the handful of powerful supercars that emerged in the late 1980s. More luxurious and timelessly styled than some of the no-frills wedge designs of the period, the model began as the dream of Jaguar_s director of product engineering, Jim Randall, who wanted to field a car similar to Porsche_s 959. Jaguar Design_s Keith Heflet penned the gorgeous low-slung bodywork, whilst engineering focused on integrating a 48-valve racing V-12 developed by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR). Debuting to great acclaim at the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show, the prototype XJ220 was approved for production after customer interest skyrocketed. With the Coventry factory at capacity, JaguarSport, a racing concern co-owned by the manufacturer and TWR, was assigned the task of transforming the gargantuan show car into a tractable production model. Exchanging the original V-12 for a turbocharged V-6 that had been successful in the XJR-10 and 11 race cars, the development team was able to shorten the wheelbase by eight inches. After suspension work at the N_rburgring, where the model set a lap record, and the appointment of a sumptuous interior styled by Nick Hull, the XJ220 began making deliveries in 1992. Five hundred forty-two horsepower and 475 foot-pounds of torque, performance numbers that favourably compare with many of today_s fastest cars, gave the XJ220 awesome power, quicker to 60 mph and faster (217 mph!) than both the Ferrari F40 and the Lamborghini Diablo. The story of XJ220 serial number 220628 begins on its completion date which, according to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, was February 23rd, 1994. Being the 11th from the last built, 220628 was one of the 14 placed in climate controlled storage by the Jaguar factory. Enter Muncie, Indiana native Gary Bartlett. Bartlett, a respected Jaguar collector, happened to meet a Jaguar executive at a vintage rally in Belgium in May 1999 who informed him about the 14 XJ220s still in storage at Jaguar. Bartlett decided that if he could get an XJ220 into the U.S. he would purchase one. At that time, the U.S. Congress was conveniently in the midst of passing the _Show or Display_ exemption. _Show or Display_ is a constitutional amendment to the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards that allows vehicles of historical or technological significance to be brought to the U.S. that previously did not meet the safety standards of the year they were manufactured, bearing some restrictions. The amendment can be traced back to Microsoft founder Bill Gates who reportedly had a Porsche 959 locked at a customs port for over 13 years. _Show and Display_ was passed on August 13th, 1999, two days after Bartlett filed his application to import a newly purchased XJ220. Serial number 220628 was then pulled out of hibernation and the engine was brought up to spec. by TWR. In the spring of 2000 Jaguar_s Engineering Center in Whitley, Coventry performed the U.S. Certification work before 220628 came to the EPA testing facility in Linden, New Jersey. On March 1st, 2000, Gary Bartlett was issued _Show and Display_ certificate SD00-001, meaning that not only was 220628 the first Jaguar XJ220 to be in the United States, it was the first vehicle imported in the U.S. under the _Show and Display_ exemption law. This XJ220 was the only example tested and treated by Jaguar so that it met EPA and NHTSA compliance. All other XJ220s that entered the U.S. were modified by shops who were, in most cases, unfamiliar with the marque. 220628_s exclusive, thorough tuning by the Jaguar factory makes it arguably the most collectable XJ220 in existence! Gary Bartlett and his Silverstone Green XJ220 were featured on the cover and in an extensive article in the January 8th, 2001, issue of Autoweek Magazine. Further pedigree would come during the 2002 Ault Park Concours d_Elegance, where it was the recipient of the Grand Marshalls Trophy. This enjoyment was slightly hindered by the mileage restriction that comes with the _Show and Display_ law. The vehicle would change ownership twice by the mid 2000_s and eventually settle in a private auto collection in California. Daniel Schmitt & Co. acquired 220628 from this private collection in the summer of 2016. Upon arrival in St. Louis, 220628 only displayed 8,636km or 5,366 miles. Despite this, a full engine out service was needed to ensure the vehicle_s performance After consulting with Gary Bartlett, 220628 was sent to the last remaining XJ220 specialist in the U.S. __ Gail Carpenter of G.C. Performance Classics in Nashville, Tennessee. Carpenter attended XJ220 School with Bartlett at Jaguar and is incredibly well-versed in the workings of the XJ220. He has since stated that 220628 was the last XJ220 he would service before _retiring_ from the model. Ironically, the car that brought Bartlett and Carpenter together nearly two decades ago is now the last one to receive this comprehensive service in the United States. Current and Future XJ220 owners will have to send their vehicles to England for servicing where there is already a two year waiting list. Considering the amount of effort that it took for Bartlett to get 220628 into the U.S. from England, it almost seems fruitless to send it back there just to get serviced. As it stands, 220628 has been completely mechanically renewed at a cost of nearly $90,000. (Click_HERE to view the invoices from the engine out service). The car is still finished in its extremely desirable color combination of Silverstone Green over a Sand leather interior as verified by its accompanying Jaguar Heritage Certificate. Its 540 horsepower, 3.5 litre twin __turbocharged V6 engine and 5-speed manual gearbox are once again ready to thrill the senses of its future caretaker. When seated in the pilot_s chair, you are strapped in by Willans racing harness seat belts and surrounded by gauges that are integrated into the driver door panel. The full Connolly leather interior reminds you that this is an English supercar. 220628 is superbly documented with its factory tools, service history, build sheet copy, Jaguar Heritage Certificate, factory correspondence letters, the issue of Autoweek magazine featuring the car and more! This simply is not a XJ220; this is the XJ220! Daniel Schmitt & Co. is proud to offer 220628 to the most particular collector or alert investor who only desires the best. These cars rarely come to market, and 220628 is arguably the most famous example of an XJ220 with its unique history and provenance. Do not miss out on this incredibly opportunity to own one of the most historically significant super cars in existence! Classic cars have proven to be among the most resilient and rewarding investments in recent years with the Historic Automobile Group Index (HAGI) jumping 39% in 2013, 16% in 2014 and 17% in 2015 while posting gains of 467% over the last 10 years.
