E.R. Thomas of Buffalo NY was a pioneer of motorized transport who would go on to become one of the most famous names during the dawn of the automobile. From humble beginnings selling kits to retrofit petrol engines to bicycles E.R. Thomas steadily grew his business ultimately producing some of the most prestigious and powerful luxury automobiles in America culminating with the world-famous Thomas Flyer one of which won the first and only New York to Paris round-the-world automobile race in 1908. Thomas Flyers are among the most coveted of Brass Era automobiles.From the firms early days comes this gorgeous E.R. Thomas Auto Bi. The companys two-wheeled offerings were advertised as the Thomas Motor Bicycles Auto-Bi and promised the cyclist no hills no headwinds always coasting at any distance. The earliest Auto-Bi engines were retrofitted to existing bicycle frames before Thomas began producing complete motorbikes with in-house frames. This jewel-like Auto-Bi is an early example featuring a Buffalo-built Pierce bicycle frame and is equipped with a Thomas single-cylinder engine. It is gorgeous in every respect having been restored to a very high standard with gorgeous brass and nickel detailing beautiful maroon paintwork on the frame and wooden rimmed wheels with white tires.
