This stunning 1936 MG TA Special has been turned into a one-off tribute to the Q-Type by marque specialists XPAG engineering. The new all-aluminum Boat Tail body and restored chassis are finished in dark blue. The MG is powered by an overhauled and balanced XPAG engine enlarged to 1350cc. The Laystall Lucas alloy cylinder head is modified for unleaded fuel. There is also: a sports camshaft, matching distributor, twin SU H2 carburetors and stainless steel exhaust. The suspension features new Andre-Hartford dampers at the front and reconditioned Armstrong units in the rear. The steering box has been restored and a new 15.5 inch Blumels steering wheel fitted. The brakes have been overhauled and the standard drums replaced with Alfin units. The front axle, differential and gearbox have all been extensively refurbished. All brightwork has been re-chromed, the headlamp reflectors re-silvered, and a new radiator fitted. A new period-style fascia has been created and equally period style instrumentation and controls installed. The interior is freshly upholstered and equipped with a split tonneau in blue mohair.
There were only eight original Q-Types assembled at Abingdon, making it one of the rarest of all MGs. The Q-Type was a highly modified racer based on the P-Type but fitted with a boat-tail alloy body. Although successful, the combination proved too fast for its small frame and a solution was in development when MG abruptly discontinued its racing program in July of 1935. Without factory support, local enthusiasts found the new TA frame an acceptable remedy and soon fitted it with the famed boat-tailed body - and the Q-Type Special was born. When the TA was later coupled with the larger and more reliable XPAG engine introduced in 1939, the evolution was complete.
The car offered here began its life as TA 0784 in October of 1936. Today, the restored TA Chassis is powered by a freshly overhauled and balanced XPAG engine enlarged to 1350cc. It presents beautifully and runs and drives wonderfully. Offered with service records and documentation. The restoration of this delightful MG has only just been finished and it comes complete with a full photo history of the extensive work.
