1940 Buick Series 40 Special

Price: USD $54,995

This 1940 Buick Series 40 Special 4 Door Convertible Phaeton is a nicely preserved pre-war convertible that is ready for some serious cruising! After a brief hiatus during the Great Depression years, the Buick Series 40 was re-introduced as an entry-level model for the GM marque, replacing the entry-level offerings of the Marquette companion brand and slotting in underneath the Series 50 which was Buicks own entry-level model. Starting in 1936, Buick began assigning actual names to its models which was a departure from the GM marques previous naming convention assigning numbers (40, 60, 80, and 90) to each model Series. Buicks new naming model assigned Special to its Series 40, Century to its Series 60, Roadmaster to its Series 80, and Limited to its Series 90 automobiles. By 1940, the US economy had started to recover from the effects of the Great Depression and American car sales appeared to be on the rebound, especially for Buick which sat in fourth place among the American manufacturers. The 40 Buicks received substantial styling updates including the incorporation of the headlights into the front fenders with parking lights now sitting on top of the fenders and, on some body styles, the removal of running boards. In hindsight, both of these changes served as accurate foreshadowing of where automotive design was heading in the years to come. With regards to the 1940 Buick Special, the wheelbase saw a 1 inch increase from 120 inches to 121, likely due to the reintroduction of the Series 50 Super which shared a chassis with the Special. The Buick grilles were also changed in 1940 from the previous years design and now consisted of thicker horizontal bars which gave the 1940 Buicks a larger appearance. In total, the Special Series 40 models were the second most popular Buicks in 1940, with the new Super selling a little over 10,000 additional vehicles. Among the 117,355 Buick Specials produced in 1940, by far the most expensive and thus rarest passenger car body style was the 4 Door Convertible Phaeton of which Buick only produced 552 examples. Powering this 40 Buick Special Phaeton is a 248 Cubic Inch Inline 8 Cylinder engine paired with a single 2 barrel carburetor that was said to have produced 107 horsepower back in 1940. The 248 Straight 8 is backed by a 3 speed manual transmission that is shifted using a column-mounted 3 on the Tree shifter. Exhaust exits the Buick Dynaflash 8 Cylinder powerplant through a single exhaust pipe that is accented with a chrome tip. This 1940 Buick Convertible is equipped with several nice options including a pair of amber lens fog lights, a front bumper guard, and dual outside chrome mirrors. The beige canvas convertible top has a glass back window and is in excellent condition, appearing to be almost new. This 40 Buick Special rides on a set of wide whitewall radial tires on red painted steel pressed wheels that are accented by chrome hubcaps. The exterior on this Buick Convertible Phaeton has been correctly refinished black which completes the exterior look of the car. The interior on this 1940 Buick Series 40 is exquisite! The front and rear bench seats have been correctly reupholstered in red leather. The black painted dash, red upholstered door panels, red carpeting and steering wheel all appear to be in wonderful condition and all appear to be in their stock configuration. The black painted dash is accented with engine-turned style trim inserts and is equipped with a 110 MPH speedometer, battery gauge, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge and fuel gauge, as well as a Sonomatic AM radio and clock. Whether youre adding to your pre-war classic car collection or youre buying your first classic car, this 1940 Buick Series 40 Special 4 Door Convertible Phaeton would make an excellent choice.
