As Renault witnessed the runaway success of the Volkswagen Beetle in the US market bosses at the French firm wanted a piece of the action. At a meeting of US Renault dealers held in Florida a sporty and stylish new halo model was proposed to help boost sales of the rear-engine Dauphine. Debuted at the 1958 Paris Motor Show the new Floride featured handsome two-door styling by Pietro Frua for Carrozzeria Ghia atop an otherwise standard Dauphine platform. Curiously despite its origins in the Sunshine State Renault opted to call the car Caravelle in the USA for fears of alienating buyers who werent from Florida! This 1960 Floride Convertible is a gorgeous example finished in a sophisticated livery of pale gray with a contrasting black hard top and a red and gray interior. It is in outstanding condition with beautiful detailing upholstery and finish quality. In addition to the removable hardtop this car also features a black canvas soft top which was replaced during the restoration performed in 2009. Powered by an 845 cc water-cooled four-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed manual gearbox this charming Floride is a rare and stylish runabout with a uniquely French flair. This vehicle recently arrived and a full description is coming soon.
