*1966 Sunbeam Tiger*Built between 1964 and 1967 the Sunbeam Tiger has always been seen as the little brother to the Shelby Cobra that it shares so many traits with. What isnt talked about as frequently is that the Tiger had a quite successful racing career as well racking up wins in hill climbs on road courses rallying and even drag racing. This 1966 Tiger was built as a unique tribute to one of the most famous Tiger race cars of all time- the #55 car built by Southern California hot rod legend Doane Spencer and raced by Jim Adams in B-Production races around the country.This 1966 Tiger Mk1A Roadster the fastidious work on this car was carried out by David Ley of Daves Auto Restorations in Wexford PA. Upon first look you can immediately tell that this is no ordinary Tiger thanks to extensive custom aluminum work on the trunk lid fender flares and deck panel as well as a unique hood scoop that is necessary to get enough air fed into the engine. Painted in the same colors as the original race car black with white stripes it is clear that the paint was done to an outstandingly high standard. A set of side exhausts are seamlessly integrated into the lower rockers and the standard upright windshield normally seen on a Tiger has been replaced by a more raked back frameless unit built out of aircraft grade Lexan. All of the details seen in the original car have been replicated here with striking authenticity and it is a truly special car to behold in person.When the Doane Spencer Tiger was winning races in period the rumor was that the engine was powerful enough to pull the front wheels off the ground at the start of a race. Powered by a Ford 260ci V8 from the factory Spencer and his team at Hollywood Sports Cars spent considerable time and effort turning that car into a proper competition machine- and the same can be said for this example. Starting with a Ford Racing 302ci GT40 V8 a set of AFR aluminum heads were affixed which both flow better and help keep the weight down at the front of the car. A Holley 4BBL carburetor and aluminum manifold came next along with an MSD ignition and a hopped-up cooling system to keep it all running smoothly. This resulted in a power figure of over 340 hp which when paired with a 4-speed Top Loader gearbox in a sub-2700-pound car makes every drive exciting. To help slow the cars enormous acceleration a set of Wilwood disc brakes have been installed at all four corners with dual reservoirs.Once the build on this car was completed it hit the show circuit to put on display the expert work carried out by Daves Auto Restorations. In September of 2005 the car was shown for the first time at the BeaveRun Concours dElegance in Wampum PA where it took home a blue ribbon. Shortly after this Tiger made its way into the pages of Hot Rod Magazines March 2006 issue with a two-page spread about the build and the highlights of the cars racing past. In March 2010 the car received the ultimate seal of approval for a Tiger while on display at a tribute to Carroll Shelby at Riverside Raceway when it was autographed under the hood by Carroll Shelby his wife Cleo as well as Lewis Spencer who raced one of Doane Spencers Tigers in period. The signatures stand to this day and photographs of the signing are included with the sale. In July of 2011 the Tiger made its way to the prestigious Hillsborough Concours dElegance in Hillsborough CA where it took home a 1st-in-class trophy and was one of the stars of the show. Memorabilia including the Hot Rod magazine feature some of the concours ephemera certification from the Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association and a binder full of history are all included in the sale.Get behind the wheel of any Sunbeam Tiger and you are bound to have a fun drive- its what they were designed to do. But you will be hard-pressed to find a Tiger that can hold a candle to this example- from the masterfully integrated bodywork to the powerful engine to the expertly dialed-in suspension it is clear that no stone has been left unturned during the creation of this example. What makes the Tiger such an appealing car is that it can be appreciated at almost any show you take it to you will be just as welcome at a British sports car gathering as you would at Hot August Nights and you are sure to be the star of any local cars and coffee. Doane Spencer and his team only built a few Tigers in period and those are now pieces of history relegated to large collections and too valuable to take out and enjoy.
