Interested in a rare piece of Ford history that many people are unaware ever had a connection to the Blue Oval? Consider this 1975 Bricklin SV-1 Coupe. Only made between 1974 and 1976, production of the SV-1 ended with just under 3,000 cars built. An estimated 1,700 Bricklins were believed to have survived as of 2012. The car was noteworthy for its gull-wing doors (as seen on the Mercedes-Benz SL300 a decade earlier and the DeLorean DMC-12 almost a decade later) and composite bodywork of color-impregnated acrylic resin bonded to fiberglass. Assembly took place in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on May 1, 1975. Dressed in Safety White, one of five available colors, the cars paint and trim are in overall very good order. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy and the cargo area looks good. The cars white front and black rear bumpers fit tightly to the body. To promote the cars safety bona fides, the company touted such features as its integrated roll-over structure and energy-absorbing bumpers. The Bricklins chassis is a steel perimeter frame with an integral roll cage. The front and rear bumpers are designed to absorb the force of a five-mph impact. If the taillamps look familiar, they originally appeared on the Alfa Romeo 2000 Berlina. This car rolls on BFGoodrich Radial T/As, size 235/60R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on wire wheel covers that are in good, original order while the tires are in very good condition. The front suspension uses A-arms and coil springs and is made up of parts shared with a variety of existing AMC models. At the rear is a Hotchkiss system of leaf springs on a live axle. Braking is by power-assisted 11-inch discs in front and 10-inch drums in back from Bendix. Under the hood is Fords Windsor 351 CID 16-valve V-8 engine. Backing this motor is a Ford FMX three-speed automatic transmission with a 3.15:1 rear end. Inside, a tan pair of vinyl and microfiber bucket seats greet the driver. They are in great shape for their age. The carpeting is covered by floor mats. The headliner is in decent shape. An aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel looks great. The dashboard and inner door panels are all in very good order. The console-mounted shifter looks good and an aftermarket AM/FM stereo with CD rounds out the interior. The SV-1 was the creation of Malcolm Bricklin. Prior to his Bricklin, built in New Brunswick, Canada, with a loan from the Provincial government, Bricklin is noted as the first businessman to import the Subaru brand into the U.S. in 1968. The Bricklin Canada assembly plant was located in the Grandview Industrial Park in Saint John, New Brunswick, at 150 Industrial Drive. A separate facility to produce the bodywork was in Minto, New Brunswick. This car runs and drives well and the gullwing doors are operable. It came out of a private collection from Alabama. Competition to this Bricklin in 1975 included the Avanti II, Chevrolets Corvette Coupe and the DeTomaso Pantera, available at Lincoln-Mercury dealers.
